Fastest Birthday Breakfast EVer...

18 years ago today my second child was given to us.
He was the easiest delivery of all
looked like my dad
had a great head of hair
came out talking...
ready to argue his case.
By the time actual words were formed,
he was hoarse...not kidding.

So this morning, in honor of this little devilish imp
who has turned into a young man who is his mother's joy
we ALL{insert shock and awe}
gathered around the table before school
and had a little birthday breakfast

Shortest birthday celebration ever...

6:30 am
Alarm goes off

6:42 am
Supplies are laid out

7:01 am
Zombie arrives from the basement

7:05 am
Sister arrives, needing help with a braid

7:06 am
Birthday Boy emerges from the shower

7:11 am
Birthday boy arrives to the party, not completely awake but fully dressed for school

7:12 am
Following all of our birthday well-wishes, we eat

7:13-7:18 am
We eat and laugh over stories of the impish boy-turned young man

7:19 am
We gather to pray a blessing over the Birthday Boy

7:22 am
We all gather in the garage to see the Birthday Boy and the Sister head off to school.

7:23 am
The zombie retires back down to the basement

7:26 am
Kitchen is cleaned up and another day is well on its' way...

Happy Birthday, Nick...
You are worth celebrating every day of the year!
I love you...

{To Emma...}

It is beyond me to accept that my youngest child has turned 14 today.  I don't have any way to reconcile the fact that though it seems like just yesterday I bawled like a baby as the Dr. announced, "It's a girl!!!".  I had waited so long for you...and had convinced myself you were just a part of my dreams...the kind that never really come true.  When your brothers were born I loved them each dearly...just as much as I love you.  But I was pretty sure that I wanted to have a daughter FIRST...and then follow up with a couple of boys.  I was sure it was the right thing for our family.
But, apparently not.
God had a better plan for you...

He knew you would need to be the third in the birth order...
maybe because He figured I'd have better practice being a mom by the time you came along..and I would need it.  Or maybe because He thought I would need to learn how to understand boys FIRST, because I really only get the "girl stuff".
Or maybe...

He knew that you would grow up without a consistent man in your life...and so He thought to grow the boys up first.
 They're pretty consistent...
always there...
in your face...
even when you want them to GO AWAY!

But...no matter what you think about that...you can't help but know that they love you VERY MUCH.  They would climb mountains to save you.  Cross oceans to rescue you.  Fight danger to protect you.
 Oh...and crush boys who try to chase you.  {DON'T FORGET THAT!}
God knew what He was doing when He created Alex...then Nick...and saved you for last.  He was seeing into your future, setting things up for your best.
Because He knew before anyone else... and He's had your back all along.

Emma...this is my prayer for you this year...
That as you grow and continue to discover the young woman Jesus created you to be, you will run hard after His plan for you.  I pray that you will be fully and uniquely YOU...not what others expect of you...just the YOU that Jesus requires you to be....because you're His...and He gets to say.

I pray that you will see yourself the way HE does.  That you will let Him transform your heart to beat like His does.  That your eyes would see what His sees.  And your ears would hear His whispers.
I pray you will feel loved.
Feel secure.
Feel confident.
Feel protected.
Feel free.
Feel understood.
Feel blessed.
Feel you've been allowed to become fully YOU.

I pray you will not ever want anything more than to follow Jesus with all your heart.
And I pray that HE will always be enough...

And, so, sweet girl...
as hard as it is to see you grow up,
I applaud you for the young lady you are becoming.
I am filled with joy because you are in our family.
You bring sparkle and laughter to our home...
You are loved
MORE
THAN
YOU
KNOW.

Happy Birthday, dear girl!
I LOVE YOU!

To Nick...

Not sure how it happened, but another year has gone by already and you're having a birthday...again.  Seems like just a few days ago I was looking through old pictures and posting THIS.
I remember the doctor telling me that the first year is always the slowest year of your child's life.  He was right.  I didn't believe him, because at the time you were still pooping in your pants and most of my day was spent chasing after your needs with barely a moment to myself.  But he really was right...and now I kind of hate him for being right!

I'm guessing that since this last year went by so quickly, the coming year will as well...
in which case I've made a plan:

I'm locking you in the house all year long, taking away the keys and your phone and staring at you every minute of every day.  It'll be like trying to watch water boil and it will be the longest year EVER.  And I'll be happy about that, OK?

I've told you before, but I'll tell you again that I'm proud to be your mom, Nick.  I'm proud of the young man you are becoming and the heart that is developing for Jesus.  I anticipate that there are some pretty awesome things planned for your future.  My prayer is that you live every day of life with your eyes wide open so that you don't miss a beat of what God's got planned out for you.  Find joy in every day...even when it seems impossible, and look for Him around every corner.

Happy 17th Birthday, Nick...
I love you,
Mom

Twenty years in a blink...

It used to be that when someone asked me about something that happened 10 years ago I had no memory that went back that far.  Then they'd ask about something that happened twenty years ago and I started to feel old because I can vividly remember well things that happened twenty years ago.
This is my most vivid memory of twenty years ago....

Exactly twenty years ago today my life changed forever.  This little package came my way and changed the way I see life, changed the way I see the world, and changed just about everything else I can think of too.  He was an only child for three years...back when the house was kind of quiet and orderly.  He made me realize that everything I say and do matters..because he was the first one who was watching...really watching to see if I meant what I said.  He pushed my buttons, made me cry on more than one occasion {sometimes for joy, too!}, and made me feel totally inadequate to handle parenthood.  But he was also the reason that I pushed through the fear and the uncertainty and settled on the Foundation on which I would stand.  I guess you could say he made me realize I needed to rely on Someone else for Strength and Wisdom because without It I wasn't going to do a very good job!

Alex tried my patience more than once...like this day- the day I decided to incorporate the book, "Potty-training in a Day" into our routine.  The day was a dud after about an hour of multiple cups of water, alot of pee on the floor and lots and lots of tears from both of us.
Eventually he figured it out and does quite well at pottying these days.
I'm pretty sure this picture was taken yesterday- Alex's first haircut.  I can drum up the memory and almost touch it.  {The blue and yellow pant/dress was in style for little boys those days, I assure you}
These days haircuts are a little more thrifty- they take place in our bathroom and the dress code is optional.
Getting him to smile for a picture with his prized birthday hat used to be alot easier.
now it's like pulling teeth to get him to make a straight face...
His toys have gotten bigger over the years...

And now, the first day of school doesn't involve a big yellow bus, but a walk across a college campus...
It's a strange feeling...this feeling compared to the one twenty years ago.  Back then I was twice his size and towered over him when I hugged him.
These days our roles are reversed and it's him who towers over me
One thing hasn't changed at all.  Amidst the potty training, the disciplining, the trials and errors, the disagreements, the laughter, the heartache, the joking, the laundry in the middle of the floor, the tattooing, the piercings and the shared memories, one thing has never changed:  This baby boy turned man still catches my heart when I see him.  He still makes me proud to be his mom-still makes me want to be a better me because he is watching.  He has an incredible future ahead of him that is still unfolding itself, but He has a heart to follow God and a zest for life that makes everyone around him smile.

Happy 20th Birthday, Alex
I love you!

"Be assured that from the first day we heard of you, we haven't stopped praying for you, asking God to give you wise minds and spirits attuned to his will, and so acquire a thorough understanding of the ways in which God works. We pray that you'll live well for the Master, making him proud of you as you work hard in his orchard. As you learn more and more how God works, you will learn how to do your work. We pray that you'll have the strength to stick it out over the long haul—not the grim strength of gritting your teeth but the glory-strength God gives. It is strength that endures the unendurable and spills over into joy, thanking the Father who makes us strong enough to take part in everything bright and beautiful that he has for us."
